In 1929 the first break wall was built by the American Construction Co. to protect Cleveland's water treatment plant located at E. 140th & Lakeshore Blvd. Unfortunately the newly constructed wall provided no access to Lake Erie, so a benevolent entrepreneur donated $10,000.00 to break through the wall. In 1938 membership fabricated the first wooden docks and White City Yacht Club was formed. By the end of 1945 the club had 100 dedicated charter members maintaining the wooden docks when in 1952 a major Lake Erie storm destroyed them. Without delay, the highly devoted club membership worked together to design & assemble new steel docks to replace the old and devistated wooden docks.
A building which served as a testing site for military torpedo's was purchased in 1948 for $1.00 from the United States Navy with intentions to create the first clubhouse. The 15' x 30' building, originally located on East 140th Street, was moved by membership to its current location on club grounds and Northeast Yacht Club was born. Over the years, expansion & renovation brought many clubhouse improvements and by 1973 modern restrooms for men and women, a new state of the art kitchen, and dining area was added.In 1950 a new steel A Dock was completed and functional. Cable B Dock was under construction and well on its way.A Women's Auxiliary was established in 1955.For the next many years the club was improved and maintained by the membership. In 1999, a team of 20 to 30 dedicated members replaced the entire clubhouse roof, adding a second floor giving the clubhouse it's current gable design, while virtually doubling clubhouse square footage.
In 2002 Northeast Yacht Club's new break wall was completed. Standing 10 to 11 feet high above water and 12 feet wide, the wall was a welcomed and needed improvement for the added protection to members boats. A joint effort of the membership and financed through the hard work of the women's auxiliary a complete kitchen remodel was completed in 2002 adding commercial appliances, a full compliment of oak cabinetry, new countertops, and ceramic flooring.
2004 added the purchase of a newer 30-ton travel lift. New underground cables from the security gate to the guardhouse were also installed allowing more clearance for movement of boats and providing additional area's for boat storage. A new floating gas dock was also constructed, complete with pump out facility and fresh water. 2004 brought numerous other improvements including replacement of deteriorating concrete in driveway & parking area's.
In 2005 improvements to the electrical systems on Northeast Yacht Club's A Dock began, utilizing the talents of the club's hard working membership completion is scheduled for Spring 2006. Through the efforts of the womens auxiliary, new energy efficient windows were purchased and installed throughout the clubhouse, providing all members a new level of comfort while reducing the club's utility costs.
In 2006 the membership is continuing the work on the electrical boxes and replacing parking lot concrete. They are also tearing down D Dock and installing a new floating dock for easier access to the boats.
